Visible Veins and the Symptoms Behind Them
Your legs may feel heavy after standing, or you may notice aching, itching, or ankle swelling. Sometimes the appearance of the veins is the main concern. Explain both the symptoms and what you hope treatment will change.
Varicose veins are enlarged, winding veins beneath the skin. They do not all require a procedure. The assessment should consider symptoms, skin changes, previous treatment, and the pattern of blood flow before recommending a particular technique.
Why the Duplex Ultrasound Matters
A duplex ultrasound can identify reflux, where valves allow blood to flow in the wrong direction, and map the veins involved. It helps connect the visible veins with the underlying problem and plan treatment when needed.
Ask the specialist to explain the scan findings in everyday terms. Which vein is not working well? Is one leg or both affected? What will the proposed treatment address? Leg swelling has several possible causes, so the visible veins may not explain every symptom.
What EVLT Is Designed to Do
Endovenous laser treatment, or EVLT, closes a selected faulty superficial vein using heat delivered from a fine laser fibre. Ultrasound guides placement. Local anaesthetic is placed around the vein before controlled energy is delivered.
Blood is redirected through other functioning veins. Closing the main refluxing vein does not necessarily remove every visible branch. Ask whether additional treatment is expected and which changes in appearance or symptoms are realistic in your case.
Considering the Alternatives
Movement breaks, walking, and elevation may help some symptoms. Compression may be advised after an appropriate assessment. It should not be selected casually when circulation or other conditions need consideration.
Radiofrequency ablation, foam sclerotherapy, and surgery are other options for selected patients. Anatomy, scan findings, previous clots or treatment, and your health affect suitability. Ask why EVLT is recommended over the alternatives and what observation would involve if you do not proceed now.
Preparation Before Treatment
Tell the team about a previous clot, blood thinners, allergies, pregnancy, earlier vein procedures, skin ulcers, and any other relevant condition. Confirm whether medicines should change, how the day will run, and what transport arrangements are needed.
Bring the scan report if it was performed elsewhere. Ask about walking after treatment, prescribed compression, dressing care, and the follow-up schedule. If you are arranging leave from work, explain how much of your day involves standing, sitting, lifting, or travelling.
Walking, Compression, and Returning to Your Routine
Walking is commonly encouraged when the treating team confirms it is safe. Bruising, tenderness, or a pulling sensation may occur. Follow the individual advice about activity and avoiding prolonged inactivity rather than assuming everyone has the same recovery timetable.
If compression is prescribed, ask how to wear it and for how long. Work, exercise, driving, and long journeys need separate consideration. Tell the specialist about planned travel before treatment. A follow-up ultrasound may be part of the plan, depending on the circumstances and instructions.
Risks and Warning Signs
Discuss discomfort, inflammation of a superficial vein, skin staining, burns, nerve-related symptoms, incomplete closure, and recurrence. Clots, including deep vein thrombosis, are important risks to understand even when a procedure is performed through a small entry point.
New one-sided leg swelling or pain needs urgent assessment. Chest pain, shortness of breath, or coughing blood is an emergency. Bleeding from a varicose vein also needs urgent care. Do not wait for an online enquiry response if these symptoms occur.
Questions About Results, Follow-Up, and Cost
Ask: what does my scan show? Which vein will be treated? Will visible branches need another procedure? When will progress be checked? What symptoms should make me call immediately? Could further treatment be needed later?
For planned care at our Mumbai clinic, request an estimate identifying the scan, procedure, consumables, compression if prescribed, and follow-up. Patients from Navi Mumbai should confirm the visit schedule and travel advice. The goal is a plan that fits both the vein findings and your everyday needs.
