What you should know
SMILE means Small Incision Lenticule Extraction. A femtosecond laser creates a thin lenticule within the cornea, which the surgeon removes through a small opening to change focus. It is a different technique from LASIK and does not use a LASIK-style corneal flap.
A smaller incision is one feature of a procedure, not a personal suitability test.
Symptoms worth discussing
- Short-sightedness with or without astigmatism needing correction
- A wish to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses
- A stable prescription that still needs a full suitability examination
- Dryness or other eye symptoms that should be assessed before a procedure
A diagnosis before a decision
Screening considers prescription stability, corneal thickness and shape, tear health, and the rest of the eye. The device, treatment range, age, and local approval matter. A small incision does not make an unsuitable cornea suitable for surgery. Discuss previous operations, medicines, and reading-vision expectations.
Bring previous reports, a list of medicines and allergies, and any relevant operation notes. Tell your clinician about blood thinners, diabetes medicines, and previous anaesthetic problems. Do not stop medicines without advice.
Understanding your options
Continue Optical Correction
Glasses and contact lenses remain alternatives when they suit your eyes and lifestyle.
SMILE
Lenticule extraction may be an option for selected eligible eyes, depending on the prescription and findings.
LASIK, Surface Laser, or Lens Options
The alternative should be based on your measurements and priorities. Ask about visual recovery, side effects, and options if residual prescription remains.
What treatment can involve
After numbing drops and positioning, the laser forms a lenticule and a small access incision. The surgeon separates and removes the lenticule. You should know the planned follow-up and what would happen if treatment could not be completed as intended.
Your treating team should explain preparation, fasting when needed, anaesthesia, consent, hospital stay, and who will be available if you have concerns after discharge.
Recovery at your pace
Early vision can fluctuate. Use prescribed drops and avoid rubbing the eyes. Your team should give separate advice about work, driving, exercise, and swimming. Not having a flap does not remove the need for aftercare or make the result guaranteed.
Risks to discuss with your surgeon
- Dryness, glare, halos, or fluctuating vision
- Residual prescription or a need for additional correction
- Inflammation, infection, or difficulty removing the lenticule
- Corneal weakening or reduced visual quality in rare cases
When to seek urgent care
Sudden loss of vision, a new curtain or shadow, flashes with many new floaters, or severe eye pain needs immediate in-person eye care. Do not wait for a WhatsApp reply.
Costs, insurance, and your location
For treatment in Mumbai or Navi Mumbai, request a written estimate after the clinical assessment. The procedure, hospital, anaesthesia, tests, devices or consumables, and follow-up can affect the total. Ask about exclusions and charges if the plan changes.
Insurance cover and cashless approval depend on your policy, diagnosis, hospital, and insurer. Confirm them directly before committing. No insurance approval or fixed price is implied by this guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is SMILE actually LASIK?
No. People sometimes search for SMILE LASIK, but SMILE removes a lenticule through a small opening while LASIK lifts a flap and uses an excimer laser.
Is SMILE always better for dry eyes?
No technique guarantees freedom from dry eye. The tear film and ocular surface should be assessed before choosing treatment.
Can every glasses number be treated?
No. The prescription, cornea, device-specific treatment range, and local approval determine eligibility.
What if I still need glasses afterwards?
Residual prescription is possible. Ask in advance about glasses, follow-up measurements, and whether any further treatment could be considered.
